Kimihia Koura

Kimihia koura

Our Kimihia Kōura project is officially underway!

Our latest curious minds project ‘Kimihia Kōura’ is an investigation into the distribution, habitats and abundance of Koura in our rohe. Through this project we hope to gather information and learn alongside whānau, community and schools about all things kōura as well as strengthening relationships along the way.

The project includes a bit of spotlighting in local waterways, identifying, counting and measuring kōura then inputting the information into our project app for analysis by our taiao team. Next term, we will identify suitable locations for regular monitoring and in the school holidays we are looking at working with our whānau engagement team on having a wānanga with our tamariki. During next term we will be including the local kura, visiting the classroom and leading a field trip. We are so lucky to have Dr Emily Roberts (science educator) from Taranaki Regional Council on board as our science partner.

We held two launch sessions for information sharing with the community which went pretty well and some of you may have seen the interview with Te Korimako o Taranaki.

Please get involved if you can whānau! Anyone can participate, just download the survey123 app onto your phone ArcGIS Survey123, and follow the instructions in the app. You can also use the QR code to link survey 123 to the project.

Every observation made puts you in the draw to win a $100 Hunting and Fishing voucher and a Ngāti Mutunga gift bag! Entries close on 31 July 2024, with the prize drawn on 1 August 2024.
