TE RĀ O TE RANGI HIROA 2016

Te Rā o Te Rangi Hiroa 2016 will take place at Urenui Pa on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th November 2016.  The kaupapa for this year will be a continuation of last year’s iwi oranga kaupapa.

Te kaupapa 2016: Whakapapa Ora

What role does our whakapapa play in our personal wellbeing?

Are ‘Nō hea koe?’ and ‘ko wai koe?’ Indicators for our health?

If it is true that we are a product of all who have gone before us

How does that present itself in our Oranga?

The kaupapa (theme) for Te Rā o Te Rangi Hiroa 2016 has been inspired by the Charter Review Road show and by recent discussions held by Te Runanga o Ngati Mutunga on the ‘health’ status of our iwi members of Ngati Mutunga.

Te Rangi Hiroa demonstrated commitment to the health of Maori and Pasifika peoples over his life that has been well documented.  What role might ‘whakapapa’ have played in some of his decision making to take the pathways he chose to achieve the outstanding health outcome that he delivered in his life time?

In visiting the different regions for the Charter Review Road show the common demoninator for all of us when we meet is our whakapapa and the experience of meeting real living descendants has been an uplifting experience for all as we visited each region.

The common questions ‘Nō hea koe?’ and ‘ko wai koe?’ open up all manner of conversations of whakapapa linkages, inter-generational mapping, connections, a knowingness, physical likenesses, mirror imagery, common characteristics – It is a fascinating uplifting experience that is sometimes difficult to explain but is certainly ‘felt’ when you are in that ‘zone’ of connectedness .

If knowing one’s whakapapa is an uplifiting positive experience and adds to our overall ‘oranga’ and well being – then how do we strengthen that as a positive health indicator?

What are the other positive health indicators for you, your whanau, your hapu and your iwi?

What might Te Rangi Hiroa say to us today?

What health strategy might he have developed for his iwi today?

No reira e te iwi,

Tihei whakapapa ora

Tihei whanau ora

Tihei iwi ora

Tihei Mauri Ora!

We have now adopted that practice for Te Rangi Hiroa Celebration days and  so again this year we would like to keep within that ratio of kai naturale to process foods.
